Virginia Central Railway #347
Title:  Virginia Central Railway #347
Description:  Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in July of 1892 for the West Virginia Central & Pittsburg Railroad as their number #28, The locomotive was transferred over to the Western Maryland Railroad in 1906 being renumbered #347 and classified as an H3-c Consolidation. In 1929, the locomotive was sold to the Virginia Central Railway which kept the WM number #347. The locomotive was sidelined in 1938 and subsequently scrapped later that year due to the removal of 37 miles of track from a total of 38 miles ranging from Orange, Virginia, to West Fredericksburg, Virginia, which caused the locomotive to be surplus power to other, more powerful locomotives on the roster such as Ex: C&O 2-8-0 #901. This photograph shows #347 in the Fredericksburg, Virginia, yards shortly before the mainline was cut back to 1 mile and the engine was retired and scrapped. Month and year are correct. Exact day is an estimate.

Virginia Central Railway #100
Title:  Virginia Central Railway #100
Description:  Built by the Davenport Besler Locomotive Works in February of 1926, #100 was originally built for the American Engineering & Construction Company with no number probably being used in the construction of the U.S. Sugar Corporation's rail lines in Florida especially around Hialeah, Florida. After construction was finished, the locomotive was sold to the U.S. Sugar Corporation for use switching the sugar processing plants in Clewiston, Florida. Later, at an unknown date, the locomotive was purchased by the Southern Iron & Equipment Company of Atlanta, Georgia, and assigned inventory number #2423. In 1938, the locomotive was resold to the Virginia Central Railway of Fredericksburg, Virginia, as #100 and worked the incredibly long 1 mile mainline from Fredericksburg to West Fredericksburg switching industries until it was totally destroyed in a disastrous engine house fire in 1949. If you look closely under the cab, you can see painted on the metal the Virginia Central's reporting marks "VC" and the number #100. The seller I bought this from on eBay had it listed with very little information but I was able to put the puzzle pieces together and discover the true identify of this nifty 20 ton gas powered locomotive. This photograph displays #100 appearing to cross a trestle somewhere on the 1 mile line. I believe that the short trestle the engine is traversing crosses over Hazel Run in West Fredericksburg, Virginia. Date is an estimate. Photographer unknown.

Description:  The Virginia Central Railways Orange, Virginia, Passenger Station is still alive and well even after the track between West Fredericksburg, Virginia, to Orange, Virginia has been abandoned since 1938. Now in use as a private dwelling, the station is located on what used to be the northern leg of the wye connecting the Southern Railways mainline to the Virginia Central's mainline.

Virginia Central Railway Fredericksburg Passenger Station
Title:  Virginia Central Railway Fredericksburg Passenger Station
Description:  The Virginia Central Railways Fredericksburg, Virginia, Passenger Station is still in existence today as a restaurant. It was built around 1926 when the railroad converted its track from 3 Foot Narrow Gauge to Standard Gauge. The building was probably used by the VC as it's headquarters until the line was finally abandoned on March 1, 1984.
