Dismal Swamp Railroad #3 |
Description: |
Built by the Burnham, Williams & Company in October of 1902 with construction number #21040, #3 was purchased new by the Richmond Cedar Works Company for use on their Dismal Swamp Railroad subsidiary. 42" Gauge Mogul #3 would spend its entire life hauling juniper logs from inside the Great Dismal Swamp to sawmills located at Camden Mills, Virginia, and Lynch's, North Carolina. This peculiar operation existed until 1941 when the Richmond Cedar Works was reorganized as the Dismal Swamp Corporation and the logging operation and the railroad were consolidated. An agreement made with the reorganization was the discontinuing of the Dismal Swamp Railroad which was to be replaced with trucks. The final piece of steel was removed at Camden Mills, Virginia, on November 27, 1941. #3 was stored at Camden Mills, Virginia, until the early 1940s when it was scrapped. This photograph shows #3 with a train of juniper logs probably returning from the swamps in July of 1936 at Camden Mills, Virginia. Exact date is an estimate. From Don Hensley Jr. negative. |

Dismal Swamp Railroad #6 |
Description: |
Built by the Vulcan Iron Works in December of 1909 with construction number #1440, 42" Gauge Mogul #6 would go on to spend its entire life hauling logs in and out of the Great Dismal Swamp. With the dismantling of the Dismal Swamp Railroad in November of 1941, #6 was orphaned on a nine mile spur located south of Lynchs, North Carolina. The reason for this was because trucks were unable to access the lumber tracts in that part of the swamps because of a lack of roads. When the final logs were harvested from that lumber tract in the 1940s, old #6 was scrapped near the old sawmill at Lynchs, North Carolina. This photograph shows old #6 tied up with the "passenger train" at Benefit, Virginia, south of Chesapeake, Virginia. Due to the railroad being a common carrier, management had to provide some sort of passenger train across the line. As seen in this photo, the passenger train usually consisted of one or two flat cars and a very primitive coach built from an old wooden boxcar. Passenger service on the railroad was offered as late as 1939, so the photographer could have hopped right on as this image was taken in July of 1936. Exact date is an estimate. Don Hensley Jr. negative. |

Dismal Swamp Railroad #3 |
Description: |
Long since retired, 2-6-0 #3 sits in the deadline at Camden Mills, Virginia, on Sunday, August 29th, 1948. Note the faded but legible "D S Corp" lettering on the side of the tender. This was the last livery any of the Dismal Swamp Railroads locomotives had before the end. Its quite interesting that the locomotive was still largely in one piece at this date as the railroad had been abandoned some 7 years before this photo was taken. I cant think of any reason the locomotive was kept this late except that maybe the Richmond Cedar Works didnt have the capital to spend on scrapping or shipping out the engine. |
